Do you know that online phishing is one of the most common scams in Singapore?

If you receive emails or SMSes claiming that your online banking have been locked or suspended, and then directed to a dubious website enter your online banking login credentials, please not do so. It might be a phishing scam!

As the threat of online phishing grows, it is important for everyone to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their personal financial data.

Here are some tips on how you can avoid these scams

  1. Do not disclose your online banking access code, PIN or One-Time Password (OTP) to anyone over the phone or in an SMS or email, even if they claim to be bank officers or the police.
  2. Do not disclose your credit card number, expiry date, CVV or OTP to anyone.
  3. If you receive weblinks from emails, SMSes, or Whatsapp messages from an unknown sender, do not click on them as these may be phishing attempts.
  4. Be alert and carefully check any notifications sent by banks or any financial services you use. If you are asked to execute or ‘authorize’ transactions that you were not aware of, please do not do so.
  5. When using your credit or debit card, do not key in an OTP to authorize payment if you are not making an online purchase. In addition, do not be fooled into keying in an OTP to “reactivate” or “unlock” your card.
  6. Report any fraudulent charges on your credit card bill to the bank immediately if any.
  7. If you changed your phone number or email address recently, please update your banks as soon as possible to prevent any information being sent to the wrong person.
